WIN A CLASSIC SURFBOARD AND HELP SAVE VETCHS REEF

The Save Vetchs Association consists of 12 individuals representing all the water sport users whom are making a brave attempt to thwart the building of a small craft harbour at Vetchs Reef......

The Save Vetchs Association has filed legal papers for a judicial review as they believe   some political strings have been pulled to get official go ahead. To stop this small craft harbour we require substantial funding support. And fortunately we have managed to obtain two classic style surfboards from two of South Africa’s great shapers of the ‘70’s. Your competition ticket gives you two chances to win either one of these classic surfboards.
 
Spider Murphy shaped the Shaun Tomson original. This board was designed specifically for Pipe, and it performed beyond all expectations, allowing Shaun to break the goofy footers’ vice grip at pipeline. The board allowed Shaun to push backhand surfing to unheard of boundaries. He led the Free Ride generation during the Hawaiian winter of 1976, as well as winning the Pipe Masters that year and world championship the year after. Spider’s innovative design was responsible for one of the key changes that took pro surfing along a totally new path. Mike Larmont shaped the Lightning Bolt for South African champion Paul Naude who had been invited to compete in the Pipeline Masters in 76. Utilising the templates of the great Hawaiian shapers’ curves, Mike created a classic design that Paul surfed to third place at the 76 Masters, which was an unheard of success for a rookie on the North Shore.
 
The Bolt was then borrowed by Cape great Jonathan Paarman who had an invite to compete in the Duke Kahanamoku Classic and Smirnoff Pro at Sunset Beach. The “Sleek Zeek” as it became known responded to JP’s power carves and he made the finals of both events.  JP finished 4th in the Smirnoff Pro and 5th in the Duke. The replicas are beautiful boards, and are shaped and glassed already.
