ABOUT SALT SURF MAG
SALT Magazine is South first and only dedicated longboarding webzine, created by Brad Weare, a South African & KZN longboard champion and 2010 National Team surfer. The webzine also focuses on the alternative side of surfing that forms part of the periphery of the longboard scene such as SUP,'s and the post-modern surf (alt. surf) movement. The title SALT was chosen as it represents the fundamentals of the webzine, namely: Style, Artistic expression, the Lifestyle and Timeless appeal. The name can also be interpreted as 'South African Longboarding Tabloid' or 'Surf A Longboard Today'. The magazine was created to provide this underground yet highly popular sub-culture, within mainstream South African surfing culture, a platform and voice in which to expose the surfers, artists, shapers, personalities, photographers and other creatives that make up the scene, and to promote and report on the sport, lifestyle, products and events that so many subscribe to. The failure of the mainstream South African surf magazines to reflect these aspects of the alternative surf scenes was a major motivation to launch this platform.
SALT Magazine was initially conceived as a print publication but after much research and factoring in events such as the economic downturn of 2009 and the investment risks, the decision to go digital was the right one for us. Not only does eliminate a huge risk factor from the equation, it also allows us the potential to reach a much larger audience, offer affordable advertising rates to South African surf companies and to do things you simply cannot with a print publication. We've still kept the magazine format, presented in a unique way that offers full-page (screen) features with high-quality images, engaging text and easy navigation. Through this we've tried to utilize a web page as best we can to offer an impactful, informative and user-friendly user experience.
Through SALT Magazine we hope to promote South African longboarding and the alternative surf movements both locally and abroad. As a brand we'll be getting involved on a grass-roots level by offering prizes and sponsorship of local and national events as well as a number of other initiatives. We hope this magazine inspires new-comers to the sport while keeping the devotees entertained and informed because at the end of the day this is a platform about your world. Please feel free to contact us at any time for any queries or questions you may have. Enjoy!
